View fullsize Steve Sauer Hikidashi Guro , 2012 Hand dug stoneware clays and hand dug iron baring slips Fired in our anagam called Ochawan-gama (Tea bowl kiln) 2.75 x 5.25 inches 7 x 13.3 cm SSa 4

Steve Sauer is an American ceramic artist born in 1945. Sauer was raised in the Pacific Northwest and went to college for Oil Painting and Art History. After college, he switched to clay and became a self-taught potter still based in Washington. His pottery, in his words, “wants to reflect a delicate balance of life, evoking thoughts about man’s place and the consequences of his hand on this earth.” Sauer uses an anagama kiln to fire his work, finding the simplicity of the ash, flame, and time to be the most inline with his work. Another integral component of his practice is his connection to the pottery community around him. He credits the many friends, mentors, and fellow artists in his life with his work and success. Sauer’s vessels can be found in galleries all over the Pacific Northwest, the country, and across the globe.
