Takashi Nakazato is a celebrated contemporary Japanese potter who creates traditional Japanese ceramics imbued with a striking individuality. He was born into a family with a long history of participation in pottery work with an unbroken lineage of master potters over a period of three hundred years. Karatsu, Japan, is the home of the Nakazato family and is one the leading pottery-producing districts in Japan. Takashi Nakazato’s place in the long history of his families ceramics is the place pushing the tradition in new ways. He has created a world of ceramic craftsmanship known as “Karastsu Nanban” that imparts an artistic form to the traditional dining utensils in Karatsu pottery. Before developing Karatsu Nanban, Nakazato spent time traveling and teaching, hoping to discover the style of work he could dedicate himself to. His work is renowned and is exhibited in Japan as well as internationally in Denmark, Jamaica, and the USA among other places.
