THE COSMIC CARTOGRAPHIES OF SHANE DRINKWATER

(September 14 - October 21, 2023)

Cavin-Morris Gallery is honored to present its first exhibition of the artworks (drawn, painted and collaged) by Australian artist Shane Drinkwater.

Nature at its most minimal reflects an implied maximalism.  Skin it, shave it, break down a natural form and it will either repeat itself or display new configurations.  If we could enter the essence of a Shane Drinkwater piece the result would be similar.  His elements would re-shape and reform, and the essential language of each presentation would preserve its own essential core.

The art of Place is free-form in these works.  They are great maps of liminal imagination. They force us to accept their immediacy and their grace without allowing us full intellectual grasp.  We must trust the artist and in order to do this we must let our own expectations rest and allow ourselves to fly unencumbered in the spatial patterns.

The works touch upon our cosmogonies but don’t fully commit, they hint at resolution, they swell with mystery and yet they do not frustrate us with their opaqueness; rather they are songs of deeper intrigues.  In the end they give us permission to expand on the ordinary as demonstrations of wonder.  They suggest codes and connections but they do not demand them.  The obsessive numbers contain their own integrities as pointers pointing us elsewhere and always remain simple and non-complex.

“Lots of people want to know, but sorry, there is no special meaning in the numbers.  Since childhood I’ve had a fascination with numbers; perhaps because of a mild dyslexia, I was less interested in words and letters.”

This in itself gives a new weight and context to the numbers as seals independent of anything but their own sequential process of movement.

The artist has provided the stage sets for our own serious flights of fancy.  His love of medium hints at the recreation of old paper manuscripts that give them yet a further textured imminence.  We are invited into each piece and subtly directed on the voyage.  They are the cosmic songlines of an imaginary cosmos.
