Shari Cavin gave me my first Contemporary ceramic as a gift sometime around 2004.  It was a woodfired guinomi (sake cup) by Mike Weber.  I could not stop looking at it.  I put it on my night table and saw it before I went to sleep and as soon as I awakened.  It opened a universe for me.  I was mesmerized by this idea of ash melting in a process of controlled chaos.  A year later our gallery added a ceramic department offering Contemporary tea and sake ceramics.  Shortly thereafter we began exploring the idea of showing ceramics as sculpture.

When we met Meg Beaudoin and began to follow her trajectory into using woodfired kilns for her forms we knew we wanted to do an exhibition that would focus on an influential pair of advanced artists.  Meg, to us, represents those artists who have moved past their Eastward-looking roots and who make work geared to the present art world while maintaining respect for the Japanese wood-fired tradition.

Mike Weber is more old-school in his inspiration by Japanese forms.  Weber’s ceramics were a logical choice to exhibit because he constantly makes art imbued with his vision but he is still solidly ensconced in the ancestral challenges that the Japanese and American makers faced who have come before him.

The work by both artists is muscular and delicate at the same time.  They seem to possess animist souls.  The surfaces roil with primordial energies.  Nothing is static. Holding the pieces is like holding energized artifacts of the processed earth.  We thank both artists for their new works and for participating in this exhibition.
